Prayer Mail

Dear Partners in Prayer,

Peace be with you.

This is our weekly public prayer mail.

Thanksgivings:

1) We have had some really good services this week. The largest one was a major funeral on Thursday at the Cathedral. And the regular worship services (and the healing service on Sunday evening) were good as well. I think that the Holy Spirit has touched a lot of lives through this ministry.

2) For the progress that the students are making in the evangelism and the preaching classes.

3) For the opportunities to transform people's lives by what we do, and to be able to make a difference.

4) For a walk Julie, Lydia, and I took on Sunday in the San Isidro District of Lima through a park that was once an olive grove.

5) For the youth ministry activities that Lydia has been involved in this past week or so.

6) That Lydia is nearing the end of 11th grade.

7) For my family, here and in the U.S. They are awesome. I am so glad to be part of their lives. Wow.

8) For the healing service on Sunday evening at La AscensiĆ³n in the Surco District of Lima. We were very pleased with the results.

Prayers:

1) For the several meetings this week with regards to seminary plans and diocesan needs.

2) That we would help transform many lives by what we do, especially in the classes we teach, and the healing and prayer ministries.

3) For the people, relationships, ministries, finances, resources, and priorities associated with the Diocese of Peru, Saints Augustine seminary, and the Missionaries in Peru (including us). This is an on-going prayer, and it is a crucial one.

4) For the Albany short term mission trip plans in late July. Pray for the on-going preparations in the Diocese of Peru and the Diocese of Albany.

5) For our landlady, her husband, and the others in our apartment building. We sign our new lease next week. Up to now, there have been discussions. Shortly, we begin the implementation part.

6) For our plans at the Albany Diocesan Convention.

Thank you for praying for us. It really makes a difference. I noticed a sense of God's peace and presence this week, particularly, after the funeral on Wednesday, and I attribute it to the Holy Spirit's response to the people who have been praying. And I pray for you every day.

God bless you.

Scripture Prayer

Colossians 1: 3-6 and 9-12

We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, in our prayers for you. We thank God because we have heard about your faith in Christ Jesus and your love for all of God’s people. You have these because of the hope which is kept safe for you in heaven. Some time ago you heard about this hope in the Good News which is the message of truth. This Good News is present with you now. It is producing results and spreading all over the world as it did among you from the first day you heard it. At that time you came to know what God’s kindness truly means.

For this reason we have not stopped praying for you since the day we heard about you. We ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through every kind of spiritual wisdom and insight. We ask this so that you will live the kind of lives that prove you belong to the Lord. Then you will want to please him in every way as you grow in producing every kind of good work by this knowledge about God. We ask him to strengthen you by his glorious might with all the power you need to patiently endure everything with joy. You will also thank the Father, who has made you able to share the light which is what God’s people inherit.

Father God, we thank You for your servant Paul who has written such a beautiful prayer. And we thank You for the Mudges for whom we never stop praying. We thank You for their faith in Christ Jesus and their love for all of God’s people and the hope that has been given to them and to all of us who believe in You. We thank You for the Gospel and that this Good News is with Father Shaw and Mother Julie and Lydia right now. We thank You that they are spreading this Good News, the message about your tender kindness and mercy and grace, all over the world, but particularly in Lima, Peru, and in the months to come in Pennsylvania and New York and Connecticut.

Lord, we ask that you continue to fill the Mudges with the knowledge of your will through every kind of spiritual wisdom and insight. Let them continue to be fruitful doing work that is oh so pleasing to You. Strengthen these good people by your glorious might with power and with joy. Let your light shine through them bringing light and warmth and joy to all to whom they minister.

Amen.

April 2010 Newsletter

A better way.

As we head deeper into Autumn, here, the air is a bit cooler. It is time to be thinking about long sleeve shirts, south of the Equator. Most people reading this will be well on the way to summer.

My thoughts turn to local concerns on this side of the equator, this week. Yesterday, I officiated at a large burial service at the Cathedral in Lima. Over 200 people were there. It was not only standing-room-only, there were about 30 people outside the Cathedral who could not get in, but stood outside the church anyway.

A burial service is a resurrection service. The Anglican service is very distinctive, as it turns out. This week I learned that quite a few burial rites in Peru are different from each other, and in some areas, each town has its own, but some of these rites go back to pre-Inca times. What people have told me this week is that in some cases in the towns around Peru, the deceased is buried with something he will need on his voyage to the afterlife. Every town seems to have its own way to do this. These practices may sound like the practices of the ancient Egyptians to you. They do, to the Peruvians, as well.

But I found yesterday, at the Cathedral, that the English speaking congregation welcomed the message of life after death. I did too. I was the preacher. Yet, after this week, I am beginning to feel as if we Anglicans are but one tribe in the midst of many tribes that inhabit the city of Lima. On the other hand we have something to offer that all the other tribes do not. We do not have to fight our way to the afterlife. Jesus paved the way.

Prayer Requests:

• For safe and timely travel.
• For prayer and healing ministries in the parishes and missions.
• For our planning of the upcoming courses over the next few months.
• For the relationships, priorities, and finances of God´s people in Peru
(including ours).
• For the Diocese of Albany short-term mission trip to Lima in late July.
• That we may spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy
Spirit.
• For the CEMO interviews (Commission on Ministry)
• For Lydia as she completes 11th grade.

God bless you. Happy Easter Season, and thank you for your continuing support!

Prayer Mail

Dear Partners in Prayer,

Peace be with you.

Thanksgivings:

1) For the students who graduated on Saturday. It was a great service. The whole day was wonderful. The graduation retreat was very good, as well.

2) For the great services that we had yesterday at the Anglican Cathedral in Lima.

3) For all the visitors here this past week, attending graduation, including Denise Cox from SAMS.

4) For the opportunities to transform people's lives by what we do, and to be able to make a difference.

5) For our one year anniversary in Lima, on April 20th. The year went by so fast. It does not seem possible.

Prayers:

1) For the placement of graduates throughout the Diocese of Peru, and for the ordinations coming up on May 1.

2) For our periodic self-review of how we are doing, to help keep our focus fresh on what God is blessing and get behind it, amid the constantly changing circumstances on the ground, here. Simply put, this task means of the things we have been doing over the past few months: "Prune what is draining life, water where there is life, and plant seeds in other areas for the growth of God´s Kingdom."

3) That we would help transform many lives by what we do, especially in the classes we teach, and the healing and prayer ministries.

4) For the development of a diocesan lay studies curriculum.

5) For the people, relationships, ministries, finances, resources, and priorities associated with the Diocese of Peru, Saints Augustine seminary, and the Missionaries in Peru (including us). This is an on-going prayer, and it is a crucial one.

6) For the Albany short term mission trip plans in late July. Pray for the on-going preparations in the Diocese of Peru and the Diocese of Albany.

7) For our landlady, her husband, and the others in our apartment building.

8) For our plans at the Albany Diocesan Convention.

9) For the people trying to travel across Europe at this time, who are prevented because of ash from the volcano in Iceland. There are some people in Peru trying to return to England.

Thank you for praying for us. It makes a difference. I pray for you every day.

God bless you.

Mudge Scripture Prayer

Psalm 33: 1-4

Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous; it is good for the just to sing praises.
Praise the Lord with the harp; play to him upon the psaltery and lyre.
Sing for him a new song, sound a fanfare with all your skill upon the trumpet.
For the word of the Lord is right, and all his works are sure.

Lord, the Mudges have been your servants in Peru for just about a year now. They truly created a “new song” by leaving behind all the familiar and trusting You in all the details of a new culture and a new ministry. We thank You for everything that You have done for the Mudges in the past year and for everything that they have done for You. What a symphony of praise has been written in concert between the Mudges and Your Holy Spirit. May You continue to inspire the Mudges with Your Word which is always right, and may they continue to help You with Your works which are sure and lead only to Your Glory.

Lord we thank You especially for those students who graduated from seminary this week. We pray that You guide them into the right positions so that they may most effectively extend Your Kingdom. Amen.

Scripture Prayer

Mark 16: 15-16

Then Jesus said to them, “Go everywhere in the world, and tell everyone the Good News. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

We thank You, Jesus, for your Good News, the gift of salvation for all of those who believe in You. We thank You for the obedience of the Mudge family who heard your call and broke away from their roots in the U.S. so that they might spread this Good News in Peru. We thank You for your Holy Spirit and how Your Spirit guides Father Shaw and Mother Julie and Lydia. We ask You. Lord, to continue to guide them and protect them. Especially be with Mother Julie as she travels to and from North Carolina. We ask for travel mercies and for some relaxation and for your divine help as she represents SAMS in Peru. Amen.

Prayer Mail

Dear Partners in Prayer,

Peace be with you.
This is a public prayer mail.

Thanksgivings:

1) For a great Holy Week and for the beginning of the Easter Season. The Holy Spirit has been blessing the various services we attended, led, preached during, and helped with.

2) I feel resurrected. After our last prayer mail, my "recovery" from a cold, nose-dived (if you pardon the pun). It became apparent to Julie and myself on Wednesday evening ("Tenebrae" on the liturgical calendar), that I was was wrestling with more than flesh and blood. Julie, Lydia, and I prayed an hour and a half, after which time, my health improved dramatically.

3) For the opportunity to serve at the Cathedral in Lima over the next few months.

4) That the Holy Spirit is moving in our lives to make a difference.

5) For the nice fall weather.

6) That it is a lot easier to do the Maundy Thursday footwashing with people in sandals in Lima, than with the corresponding footwear in the US, even though people´s feet are dirtier because of sandals. The culture of this desert climate makes this service very much like the way things would have been in the Middle East in the time of Jesus. It is a very joyful service.

Prayers:

1) For the people, ministries, budgets, and resources associated with the Diocese of Peru, Saints Augustine seminary, and missionaries in Peru (including us).

2) For the Albany short term mission trip plans in late July.

3) For our landlady and her husband as our lease renewal time approaches next month. We are deciding to stay in our current apartment.

4) For Julie at the New Wineskins and the SAMS worldwide conference this week, for preparations (and the trip of) Julie, Lydia, and I, in the US from mid-May to mid-June, and for travel arrangements.

5) That the Holy Spirit would raise up the next clerical leadership for Jesus el Salvador, soon.

6) For our liturgical ministry at the Cathedral in Lima, over the months between now and mid-July.

7) For our students and our teaching, as classes resume next week.

8) For the graduation retreat, followed by graduation weekend on April 17.

9) For the diocesan ordinations on May 1.

10) For Julie as she tries to do a mid-course correction, a periodic fine-tuning of her ministry priorities.

Thank you for praying for us. It makes a difference. I pray for you every day.

God bless you.

Shaw, and on behalf of Julie and Lydia

Scripture Prayer

Psalm 150

Hallelujah!
Praise God in his holy place.
Praise him in his mighty heavens.
Praise him for his mighty acts.
Praise him for his immense greatness.
Praise him with sounds from horns.
Praise him with harps and lyres.
Praise him with tambourines and dancing.
Praise him with stringed instruments and flutes.
Praise him with loud cymbals.
Praise him with crashing cymbals.
Let everything that breathes praise the Lord!
Hallelujah!

Father God, during this Resurrection Season, we praise You with all of our being, we praise You who is the mighty source of our being. We praise You especially for your Son, Jesus Christ, who died for our sins and then was risen from the dead and gave to us the gracious hope of eternal life with You. Hallelujah!

And we continue to pray for Fr. Shaw and Mother Julie and Lydia. We pray especially for travel mercies for Julie as she journeys to North Carolina for the SAMS conference and New Wineskins. Holy Spirit, be with Julie in a special way this week and with Fr. Shaw and Lydia as they continue to serve You and the people of Lima, Peru. Amen.
