Weekly Prayer

Psalm 56:9-11

I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations;
I will sing of you among the peoples.
For great is your love, reaching to the heavens;
Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
Let your glory be over all the earth.

Be exalted, O God, above the heavens. Let your glory be over all the earth, especially in Albany and in Lima, Peru. We thank You for Fr. Shaw, Mother Julie, and Lydia Mudge and the work that they are doing, sharing your love among the peoples of Peru. Thank You for your everlasting love and your far-reaching faithfulness. Lord, bless the people of Peru especially today, their Founding Day. Protect them from the H1N1 flu. And in particular, bless Father Shaw and his brother, whose birthdays they share with the U.S. and Peru. What a delightful God-incidence, Lord. Thank You. Amen.

Weekly Prayer Mail

Dear friends in Prayer,

Peace be with you.

Praise reports this week:

1. The Life in the Spirit Seminar prayer session went well last Thursday. I am sure that many lives will be touched in a positive way by what the seminarians experienced.

2. We are getting to know the diocese a bit better.

3. Our language skills improve daily.

4. Julie's chemistry supplies have arrived.

Prayer requests:

1. Preparing for teaching in October. We plan to be teaching "Introduction to Old Testament" and an introductory theology course.

2. Improved Spanish speaking and comprehension.

3. Budget and priorities.

4. Improvement with cell phones.

5. A smooth visa process.

6. Health protection from el gripe (flu): H1 N1.

7. For the final week or two of the Life in the Spirit Seminar, remaining. It is unclear at this point, precisely how many weeks are left.

8. Continuing good terms with our landlady and the people in our building.

9. That we would be a good witness for Christ wherever we go, and that the Kingdom of God would spread by what we do.

Things of note:

Prayer requests from the parish we frequently attend (AscensiĆ³n), this week include:
for the economy,
for the end of the flu,
for all the missions in the Diocese,
for the country of Peru in this month of celebrating its founding.

Additional comments pertaining to the above:

The national equivalent of 4th of July in Peru is on July 28th. I only have one sibling, my brother. He lives in Connecticut, and his birthday is on the 4th of July. Mine is on the 28th of July. However, due to the concern over the flu here, the government has cancelled the usual parades, and schools are taking an extra two weeks vacation, in hopes of minimizing the flu's effects. So, pray for irradication of the flu.

This week, the Bishop has issued special instructions to the Diocese for the administration of the elements of Holy Eucharist, in light of increased concern about the flu, nationally.

Having said all that, we do not have any symptoms of the flu, and we do not personally know anyone who has the flu, but there is a daily count in the local newspaper for the country. Prayer for us is precautionary at this point, and prayer is important for the people of the country.

Thank you for praying for us. I pray for you every day.

God bless you.

In Christ,
Shaw, and on behalf of Julie and Lydia.

Weekly Mudge Prayer

Acts 13: 47-48

For this is what the Lord has commanded us:
“I have made you a light for the Gentiles,
That you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.”
When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.

Heavenly Father, again we lift up Fr. Shaw, Mother Julie, and Lydia Mudge to you. We thank You that you have made them a light for the Peruvians so that they may bring salvation to the people of Lima. We pray that when they minister, the people will be glad and honor Your Word, and all those whom You have appointed for eternal life will believe. Lord, we pray especially for those attending the Life in the Spirit seminar that they may know Your Holy Spirit; and for all those that attended the Spanish mass said by Father Shaw this past Sunday that they may come into that saving relationship with Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You, Lord, for every blessing with which You have graced the Mudges. Amen.

A Prayer from Liv Hicks

Father, Give Shaw and Julie and Lydia a wonderful working knowledge of their new culture. Show them the ways to do what needs to be done and give them favor in the eyes of everyone they deal with. Help them to get their residency visas. Help Shaw to tell what You want him to tell to the people this coming Sunday, give him the words, the humor, the love and the ability to communicate Your message in Spanish. Bless Lydia in her language learning and help Shaw and Julie find good language tutors to complete their learning processes. Continue to give them humor. Thank You Father for this family. In Christ we pray. Amen

July Newsletter

“Give us this day our daily bread”

Thanks to several small experiences, I’ve been seeing this familiar verse from the Lord’s Prayer in a different light recently.

Our first week in Lima, we were taken to the grocery store for a lesson on shopping. I thoughtlessly questioned why the packages of sanitary napkins were so small. “Why Julie, that’s all they can afford! They buy only what they need when they absolutely need it.”

We stopped in at an office supply store (not that common) to buy some mechanical pencils. When I sent Shaw to the register with a box, we managed to mess up the entire computer system. How so? Because they don’t sell pencils by the box. In that store, they only sell them one at a time. “They only buy what they need when they need it.”

If you hire a maid, you pay them daily, because otherwise, their family might not eat that day. “Pay him his wages each day before sunset, because he is poor and is counting on it. Otherwise he may cry out to the Lord against you, and you will be guilty of sin.” (Deut. 24:15)

Did I mention that I am finding this slightly convicting? If you really want to up your conviction level, check out James 5:4-5.

Peru is a culture in which most people live on a day to day basis. And I am not even talking about the poorest of the poor. Dear Lord, give them this day their daily bread.

How are we doing?

Language school: In the next week Shaw and I will finish language school. (Lydia continues on for some weeks yet.) Then we will work with tutors to fully integrate what we have learned into our speaking and listening. It is quite a challenge.

Present Ministry: We continue to help Bishop Godfrey lead a
“Life in the Spirit” course for the seminarians. Next week we will pray for the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Please keep this in prayer. In addition, Shaw will celebrate and preach his first sermon in Spanish this Sunday, July 19th. Please pray for him.

Residency papers: Over the next month, we will be filling out forms, visiting government offices, standing in line, etc. in order to get our carnets (our residency cards for foreigners.) This allows us to stay in the country. It is very important to get this right.

Prayer Requests:
• Listening and Speaking skills
• Life in the Spirit Seminar
• Continuing adjustment and good health
• Residency papers process

Blessings! – Julie, Shaw, and Lydia

Fr. Shaw's Prayer Mail

Dear Friends in Prayer,

Peace be with you.

This week's prayer mail:

Praise reports:

a) Language school is almost at an end, and language learning and language application continue. Now we move more into the next phase of ministry and preparing for teaching.

b) Our residential visa process has begun.

c) We are enjoying the seasonable weather and the hospitality of our Lima friends in Christ.

d) I am beginning to dream and think in Spanish. Wow! I think I am passing through the chaos phase.

Prayer requests:

a) The Life in the Spirit prayer session is on Thursday evening. Please pray for the people participating.

b) I have been asked to preach and be the celebrant at a Holy Eucharist for a congregation in Lima this coming Sunday, in Spanish. Please pray that I would say what the Holy Spirit would have me say.

c) Our language skills are in good shape, but we would appreciate your continuing to keep us in prayer for comprehension, speaking, and learning. Also, pray for our next continued steps in language learning.

d) We are beginning to minister to the lives of the people around us, in addition to the preparatory work for teaching and other diocesan ministries, here.

e) We would like continued prayers for good health, good relationships with our landlady, and our financial circumstances.

f) Lydia and Julie resume homeschooling in a few weeks. Lydia will still continue with her Spanish lessons once homeschooling begins.

g) Our residential visa process takes two important steps in the next few weeks: forms to fill out at the diocesan office on Thursday, and then a short trip to Arica (Chile) for a day or so, and then returning to Lima to continue the process. These are necessary steps, and your prayers are needed at each part.

God bless you all. I continue to pray for you, every day. Thank you for praying for us. It makes a difference.

In Christ,

Shaw, and on behalf of Julie and Lydia.

New Mudge Prayer: July 13

Psalm 85: 8-13

I will listen to what God the Lord will say;
He promises peace to his people, his saints—
But let them not return to folly.
Surely his salvation is near those who fear him,
That his glory may dwell in our land.
Love and faithfulness meet together;
Righteousness and peace kiss each other.
Faithfulness springs forth from the earth,
And righteousness looks down from heaven.
The Lord will indeed give what is good,
And our land will yield its harvest.
Righteousness goes before him
and prepares the way for his steps.

Lord, we thank you for your promises to your people, your promises of peace. We pray especially for this peace for Fr. Shaw, Mother Julie, and Lydia Mudge. Let them know your peace in every decision that they prayerfully make and may their actions bring your glory to Lima, Peru. Bless them especially this week as they prepare for baptism of the Holy Spirit in the Life in the Spirit seminar. Your love and their love for you and their faithfulness meet together while righteousness and peace kiss each other. Thank you for granting the Mudges what is good and we look forward to the spiritual harvest from the Life in the Spirit Seminar and from future mission work. Prepare the way, Lord, prepare the way, every step, for a rich spiritual harvest in Peru. Amen.

Prayer Answered: July 9

Peace be with you.

This is a public thanksgiving for a prayer answered.

Thank you for praying for us.

The transportation strike that I mentioned on Tuesday, has completely disappeared by today in Lima, and so the Life in the Spirit Seminar continues tonight as planned.

God bless you.

In Christ,

Shaw+

Prayer Response from Liv Hicks: July 8

Father, Thank You for the progress and the enthusiasm this family has in Peru. Give them some really good Peruvian friends who love sharing about their culture with the Mudges. Protect their health, give them fun learning opportunities, and bless their relationships, including the one with their landlord. Help the Spiritual Life seminar to be well attended and help the country not to have the transportation strike. Keep them all in Your Word, renew their stength, and when they get homesick meet their needs.
In Christ we pray. Amen

Fr. Shaw Mudge's Prayer Mail: July 7

Dear Prayer Partners,

Peace be with you.

This is our weekly public prayer message.

We are enjoying the winter weather here. It is a lot like early Fall in New York State.

I keep my Yahoo browser set on local Albany news, so I have been keeping up with a few events in North America.

Hope you are doing well and had a good 4th of July holiday weekend.

How are we doing? Your prayers make a world of difference. And I continue to pray for you, daily, as well.

Praise reports:
1) Every day gets better and better. Yes, we have ups and downs, but in the balance, I like Lima more and more each day.

2) Language learning is getting better. I sense improvement every day. We have about 3 weeks to go at Language School.

In addition, we have a linguist who helps us for an hour and half on Saturday mornings. She recently finished a teacher re-certification exam. I think 11,000 teachers had to take it, throughout Peru. She ended up with the 10th highest score in the test she took, in the country. She did not tell us; we found out from someone else. Very humble person. She attends the church of the Ascension where we generally attend Sunday morning services.

3) Ministry. This week Julie and I are leading the Life in the Spirit Seminar at the seminary while Bp. Godfrey is in Arequipa and at points south. I will again celebrate the Holy Eucharist in Spanish at the Seminary on Thursday evening. Please keep us in prayer, from about 6:30 pm to about 9:30 pm. The three of us seem to making a difference in the lives of the students.

Prayer requests:

1) Language learning, language speaking, language comprehension.

2) The Life in the Spirit Seminar.

3) Our finances and budget

4) Priorities.

5) Preparing for teaching in October.

6) Getting in and about in Lima. I understand there is a transportation strike scheduled from Wednesday to Friday, which would mean that the Life in the Spirit Seminar would need to be cancelled this week.

7) Family time together in Lima, and for our families in the United States.

8) Getting to know Lima. The culturalization and language learning processes are like an onion. We work at them, layer by layer.

9) That Jesus would touch the hearts and minds of the people we meet in language school and as we go about what we do in Lima.

10) Continuing on good terms with our landlady and the staff in our apartment building.

11) Making friends.

God bless you.

In Christ,

Shaw, and on behalf of Julie and Lydia.

July 4: Reply and Prayer by Liv Hicks

I think you all are wonderful and I'm so happy you're such good stewarts of your time in Peru. Language learning appears to be going well for you all, and you have a wonderful Holy Spirit that can help you recall what you are missing...Thank you for the updates!

Father, Bless these three 'saints' who gave up their language comfort to learn another language, who gave up their culture to learn another culture, who gave up their familiar path to walk with You on another path. Bless them, encourage them, give them a heart for their new country, give them grace, humor, good will, and a fine tuning to Your direction and Your help for the people they relate to daily and to each other as well. Love them and protect them and care for their daughters here in the US. In Christ we pray. Amen

Fr. Shaw's Prayer Mail: June 30

Dear Friends in Christ,

Peace be with you, and thank you for praying for us.

This is a public prayer mail.

Primary thanksgivings:

1. Language learning. Today we had a different language teacher. She thought Julie and I were in great shape considering the amount of time we have been in Peru. We had to explain that we did not start in the Advanced level two months ago, rather, that we started lower down the language learning levels at the Intermediate level. I am guessing that we are doing better than most would at this stage.

2. Adjustments to country. I think we are doing just fine. Moments of anxiety, moments of peace. That is the chaos stage for you. It is a lot like commuting.

3. Skype is rather handy for talking with family and friends.

Prayers:

1. The next three weeks in the Life of the Spirit seminar. We will have a more pronounced leadership role over the next few weeks than in the past few weeks (and we are teaching in Spanish). In addition, I have been asked by Bp. Godfrey to lead the Holy Eucharist (in Spanish), this Thursday.

As someone mentioned to us this past week, that perhaps a swimming analogy applies to us: it seems that we are being thrown into a pool, and that is how we learn to swim. (I seem to remember that when someone is thrown into such a pool, the first few strokes may not be pretty.) Pray that we would learn how to swim, and quickly (metaphorically speaking).

2a. Continuing improvement in Spanish after Julie and my course ends in a few weeks.

2b. Lydia has a bit farther to go at the language school than we do, and other homeschooling courses resume shortly for her. Please pray for Lydia in this time of transition.

2c. We would like your prayers for putting together a program of language study after language school, and we ask your prayers that our speaking ability and comprehension will improve. Apparently, we are entering deeper waters in language learning, where the best thing to do is practice, practice, practice. We would like appropriate and sufficient opportunities (not too few, not too many, just right).

3. Daily finances, and stewardship of time and resources.

4. Getting through the chaos-stage of adjustments in Peru.

5. The residential visa process, that is just beginning. We are trying to transition from tourist visa category to residential (longer term) visa category.

6. Continued prayers for our family members, particularly for Ruth and Hannah.

7. Course preparation during August and September for what we will be teaching in October.

8. Continuing good relationships with our landlady and people in our apartment building.

9. Participation in the life of the Diocese. Julie has been asked to put together and Chair a committee that coordinates matters pertaining to the people in the ordination process of the Diocese, for Bishop Godfrey.

God bless you. I remember you daily in my prayers.

In Christ,

Shaw, and on behalf of Julie and Lydia.
