Scripture Prayer

Romans 8:35 and 36-39:

Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will trouble, or distress, or persecution, or famine or nakedness, or danger, or sword? No in all these things we have complete victory through him who loved us! For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor heavenly rulers, nor things that are present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, not anything else in creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

We thank You God for the ultimate victory in your Son, Jesus Christ and for your Holy Spirit which guides us in every way to do your perfect will. We thank You that nothing can separate us from the love of Jesus. And we thank You for the ministries of Father Shaw and Mother Julie and Lydia Mudge which help to spread the news of your victory and the reality of your love to the people in Peru. Lord, we particularly thank You this week for the spiritual closeness that the Mudges have felt this week and for the progress that they have made against spiritual warfare. Continue to guide and strengthen them, Lord, so that their ministries may thrive and so that neither death nor life, nor angels, nor heavenly rulers, nor anything else in all creation may separate the Mudges and those to whom they minister from your love in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

2) For the spiritual warfare progress that we have had, particularly today.

6) For the great coffee hour consumables at the mission of La Ascension that Julie and Lydia prepared (and yes, I did help).

Prayers:

1) For students and classes this week and next. This is the last week of the current cycle. Our exam week is next week. Pray for the students as they prepare for their exam.

3) For Holy Week and Easter Week preparations.

4) For Lydia´s preparing-for-college trip in July/August.

Scripture Prayer

Romans 6: 10-11

For the death he died, he died to sin once for all, but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you too consider yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Jesus, we thank You for your ultimate sacrifice: for dying to sin once for all of us. We especially praise You for your resurrection, which allows all of us believers to be dead to sin, but alive to God, in You, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Spirit.

We thank You for the message that Father Shaw and Mother Julie teach so that others in Peru might also be dead to sin and alive in You. Thank You for their teaching and preaching ministries. We ask Lord, that You be with the Mudges as they prepare for the next teaching cycle, showing their seminarians how the apostles lived in You in the book of Acts and how they may hear your voice more clearly as they study and interpret the Bible.

As always, Lord, we pray for all the people in the Diocese of Peru: for their relationships and spiritual protection, all of their ministries, finances, resources and priorities.

Amen.

Prayer Mail

Dear Partners in Prayer,
Peace be with you.
This is our weekly public prayer mail for 27 March 2011. I can not believe it is almost April. The weather continues to change.

Thanksgivings:

1) Julie and I received our residency visas this week. That was as exciting as it was a surprise. Wow.

2) Lydia and I worked our way through some computer programs, together, this week. That was fun.

Prayers:

1) For my teaching an Anglicanism class on the Lectio Divina, Monday 28 March (covering for another faculty member).

2) For students as they prepare to decide what courses they will take next cycle. We are getting to the point where they starting thinking about signing up. The current cycle ends the week of April 10, and the next cycle begins after Easter Week.

3) For our course preparation for the next cycle. We will be teaching two courses: a course on Acts, and the second part of studying and interpreting the Bible.

4) For the annual diocesan synod on April 2, beginning at 2 pm, New York time. For the people being considered for the various positions, and the topics that will be presented and discussed (and perhaps voted on).

5) For Lydia´s preparing-for-college trip in July/August.

6) For which churches and groups to visit in the Diocese of Albany, during July and August, to talk about our work in Peru. If you would like us to visit, please let us know.

7) For the relationships and spiritual protection of missionaries and other diocesan team members in Peru, and for our ministries, finances, resources, and priorities.

6) That we would be able to keep on top of all the things that God would like us to do.

Thank you for praying for us. Your praying makes a difference for us, and I pray for you every day.

God bless you,
In Christ,
Shaw, and on behalf of Julie and Lydia

Scripture Prayer

From Luke 1: 46-48

My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For He that is mighty hath done great things and holy is His Name.

As the Virgin Mary succumbed to the will of God, bringing forth our great Savior, so the Mudges have been obedient in the Holy Spirit’s calling to them to minister in Peru. We thank You Lord, for every good gift that You have given to the Mudges as they teach and minister in Peru, bringing so many more people today and tomorrow into knowledge of You. May the spirits of Father Shaw and Mother Julie and Lydia rejoice in You and be full of joy as You do great and holy things through them.

We thank You Lord, that the visa issue has finally been resolved. We thank You for the safe return of Bishop Michael and Linda Chapman and we ask that You bless their ministry too. Thank You for the Anglican mission in Oasis; we ask for an increase in volunteers from the community and other necessary resources, so that this mission may truly be an oasis for You. Please continue to inspire Father Shaw and Mother Julie and all at the seminary who play a role in creating and implementing on-line courses. That the Mudges would be able to keep on top of all the things that You want them to do, Lord, we ask for your blessing. And for the relationships and spiritual protection of missionaries and other diocesan team members in Peru and for their ministries, finances, resources, and priorities, we ask all of this in the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer Mail

Dear Partners in Prayer,
Peace be with you.
This is our weekly public prayer mail for 21 March 2011.

Fall is here. Temperature fluctations. Please pray for everyone´s health with the changes in temperatures, and welcome to Spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

Thanksgivings:

1) I was glad to be able to see the full moon yesterday, even with the cloud cover. It is mind boggling sometimes to think that you all in the northern hemisphere, and we in the southern hemisphere, all see the same moon at the same time.

2) We had a great time this week and especially yesterday in our cross section jaunt of Lima, Peru (including date-night with Julie). Here is a video link to the Angican mission in Oasis which is one of places where we were yesterday:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccogj48jUJ4
In Oasis is a mission, of the mission of La Ascension where we worship. We may be leading a once-every-three-month Holy Eucharist there over the upcoming months, rotating with other clergy at La Ascension. Tons of kids. No running water in that section of town. A desert.

3) We had dinner with Bp. Michael Chapman the other night (he´s back). Keep Bp. Mike and Linda in your prayers as they implement their plans and ministries. He and Linda are totally awesome.

4) Had a great email note from a son of Hiram Bingham this week. Hiram Bingham was one of the two potential role models for the character of Indiana Jones. Hiram Bingham was a Yale university faculty member who was the archaeologist who discovered Machu Picchu (the 100th year anniversary of the discovery is in July, this year). He later became Governor of the State of Connecticut.

5) Thank you to everyone who was in touch with us, this week, in various ways. You all are great.

6) I had a great conversation yesterday with someone about the way Peruvians are taught in their educational system, from very young through college, and about the changes at the university level over the past few decades. This kind of knowledge helps to make our teaching methods more effective in the Peruvian context.

Prayers:

1) For the ministry of the Anglican Mission in Oasis and our role in that. The mission would like prayers for an increase in teams of volunteers from the community and prayer for ways to reach parents though team ministry (fathers and mothers). The mission runs effectively on a shoe-string budget of about $30 a month; that is a recent increase from the more traditional $15 a month.

2) For our visa and residency card situation upgrade. Hopefully we will hear something about our next step, soon.
Number of days left on our tourist visas: about 105.

3) For upcoming meetings and appointments, and adjustments in our schedules relating to ramping up for on-line courses.

4) We are moving forward with arrangements for Lydia´s going to college trip in July/August. Prayers for this trip would be appreciated, times to visit churches in the Diocese of Albany, to talk about our work in Peru. If you would like us to visit, please let us know.

5) For the relationships and spiritual protection of missionaries and other diocesan team members in Peru, and for our ministries, finances, resources, and priorities.

6) That we would be able to keep on top of all the things that God would like us to do. Tax season approacheth, and we would like prayer that we file everything correctly.

Thank you for praying for us. Your praying makes a difference for us, and I pray for you every day.

God bless you,
In Christ,
Shaw, and on behalf of Julie and Lydia

Prayer Mail

Dear Partners in Prayer,
Peace be with you.
This is our weekly public prayer mail for 13 March 2011.

Thanksgivings:

1) Nothing much happened when the residual of the Japanese tsunami reached Peru. Precautions were taken. Things went well.

2) We had our annual ant swarm in the kitchen, but Julie attended to it quickly. The weather was nice. They descended by the hundreds.

3) We received permission from Inter-varsity press to translate/arrange to translate a great book on evangelism into Spanish for our classes. We have in mind a person to do this. The book is called "True Story: A Christianity Worth Believing in," by James Choung.

4) For the continuing progress we are making with on-line education development.

5) For the progress we are making with our summer plans.

6) For our first vidmail that went out this week.

Prayers:

When I think of what is happening in Japan, this week´s prayer requests seem kind of small. But then, I remember that what matters to each of us, matters to God, so whether great or small by our standards, he cares for each of us and our requests.

1) For our brothers and sisters in Christ around the world, and for those who are suffering privately as well as those who are suffering in more public ways.

2) For our visa and residency card situation upgrade. We went to Interpol and Migraciones this week, to arrange for needed papers. Next step, call Migraciones shortly, to see what the step after that is. It is possible, with a large dose of realism, possible that the remaining step may be to get our cards. We will see.

Number of days left on our tourist visas: about 111.

3) For upcoming meetings and appointments.

4) We are moving forward with arrangements for Lydia´s going to college trip in July/August. Prayers for this trip would be appreciated, times to visit churches in the Diocese of Albany, to talk about our work in Peru.

5) For the relationships and spiritual protection of missionaries and other diocesan team members in Peru, and for our ministries, finances, resources, and priorities.

6) That we would be able to keep on top of all the things that God would like us to do.

Thank you for praying for us. Your praying makes a difference for us, and I pray for you every day.

God bless you,
In Christ,
Shaw, and on behalf of Julie and Lydia

Scripture Prayer

Proverbs 1: 1-7a

The proverbs of Solomon, David’s son who was king of Israel, given to grasp wisdom and discipline, to understand deep thoughts, to acquire the discipline of wise behavior—righteousness and justice and fairness—to give insight to gullible people, to give knowledge and foresight to the young—a wise person will listen and continue to learn, and an understanding person will gain direction—to understand a proverb and a clever saying, the words of wise people and their riddles. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.

Lord, we pray for Father Shaw and Mother Julie and Lydia Mudge. We pray that You continue to send them wisdom and that they continue to exercise discipline in their lives of ministry in Peru. May their ministry always be full of righteousness, justice and fairness as they give insight and knowledge and spiritual insight to the people of Peru. May they continue to learn and gain direction from You as they live in awe and reverence of You, that reverence being the beginning of knowledge.

We also pray Lord for a final resolution to the visa issue, for guidance as the Mudges plan for Lydia’s start at college and the trip to the USA for that purpose, for continuing progress in on-line education. As always, we pray for the relationships and spiritual protection of all missionaries and diocesan team members in Peru and for their ministries, finances, resources and priorities. Amen.

March Newsletter

Shaw administering communion about a week ago.

My secret.

When I think of what we are doing in Peru, I think of the Great Commission.
Jesus said:

1) "Go and make disciples of all nations" (NIV). Is that on target! That includes us in the nation of Peru.

2) "Baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." We Mudges are ordained clergy, and baptizing is part of what we do. I personally am in more of supporting role here with regards to my colleagues, but I have done at least one baptism at the Cathedral.

3) "Teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." This is the area that we focus our efforts as seminary faculty in Lima: training future and present leaders of the Diocese of Peru (clergy and lay) how to be disciples of Jesus Christ who make disciples of Jesus Christ. Much of what we do is teaching.

That is our mission. That is what we do. But that is not all we do. For, on occasion, we find ourselves ministering to people, as we go about our daily activities, such as to a taxi driver the other day. He was informing Julie and myself of his view of life, and I sensed from the Holy Spirit that he had a distinct lack of peace, and that he was searching for something firm to hold onto.

I also sensed a nudging of the Holy Spirit to share with him my secret for living life.

In a nutshell, I said: "My secret is this. When making decisions, I listen for the peace of God. When making decisions I want to look for an indication of the peace of God that passes all understanding as a guide as to what to do. That is it."

And, as I shared this, I sensed the taxi driver was listening intently. Please remember him in your prayers.

And I wish that for you, as well. In the midst of the trials and triumphs of your life, may the Holy Spirit guide you this month with the peace of God that passes all understanding in your decision making.

News flash! We will be helping Lydia get to college in July and August. If you would like us to visit your parish or group during that time, to talk about our mission work, please let us know.

Prayer Requests:
• For our courses and course plans.
• For the students.
• For our relationships, priorities, ministries, and finances.

God bless you, and thank you for your continuing support! I pray for you, every day.

Shaw+, and on behalf of Julie+ and Lydia

Prayer Mail

Dear Partners in Prayer,
Peace be with you.
This is our weekly public prayer mail for 7 March 2011. The School year and parish program year are starting in Peru, summer vacation begins about Epiphany and effectively ends on Ash Wednesday.

Thanksgivings:

1) For power point presentations. They complement my teaching style really well. They are great fun to put together, and the students like them.

2) The progress we have made, getting Lydia ready for college.

3) That Padre Alberto has returned to La Ascension from his vacation. I like his preaching and his musical ability.

4) For the progress we are making, planning our classes for the rest of the year.

5) For the continuing progress we are making with on-line education development.

6) For the good times we have sharing our faith, as people are open to that.

Prayers:

1) For our visa and residency card situation upgrade. We went to Interpol and Migraciones this week, to arrange for needed papers. Next step, call Migraciones in about a week and a half, to see what the step after that is. It is possible, with a large dose of realism, possible that the remaining step may be to get our cards. We will see.
Number of days left on our tourist visas: about 119.

2) For upcoming meetings and appointments.

3) We are moving forward with arrangements for Lydia´s going to college trip in July/August. In the US, aside from getting Lydia up and going to college, we will be available to visit parishes in the Diocese of Albany. Prayers for this trip would be appreciated.

4) We are in the process of hopefully sending out our monthly newsletter, beginning this month, in written form and perhaps in a video or powerpoint format as well.

God bless you, and have a blessed beginning of Lent.

In Christ,
Shaw, and on behalf of Julie and Lydia

Scripture Prayer

Matthew 7: 7-8

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

Father God, we ask for blessings for Fr. Shaw and Mother Julie and Lydia Mudge. May they have courage to do what You ask them to do; may they have your wisdom in knowing exactly what that is; and may the power of Your Holy Spirit guide them into all truth.

We thank You, Lord, for blessings of the past weeks: Lydia’s retreats, the service at La Ascension and Fr. Shaw’s new liturgy book, and breakthroughs with computer links. We ask for a resolution of the visa and residency card situation, for perfect healing for Fr. Shaw from his eye infection, for Julie’s meetings with people in the ordination process and for all the planning necessary for Lydia’s driving test and her start at Gordon College this summer.

Thank You. Lord, that everyone who asks receives, and all who seek will find, and that whenever a person knocks, You are there to open the door. Amen.

Prayer Mail

Dear Partners in Prayer,
Peace be with you.
This is our weekly public prayer mail for 1 March 2011.

Thanksgivings:

1) For the retreats that Lydia has been on, the last two weekends, which:
a) were great for Lydia, and
b) gave Julie and myself time together.

2) Julie got a great haircut.

3) We had a major breakthrough in consolidating bits and pieces of computer links for our seminary course. This made searching for the Internet resources a lot easier for the students.

4) Service at La Ascension went very well on Sunday. Used my new liturgy book. A good move.

5) Thank you to everyone who has been in touch with us this week. We enjoyed hearing from you, and I liked the Chapman sightings.

Prayers:

1) For our visa and residency card situation upgrade. We went to Migraciones, and we had two surprises this week, brought on by what could have been a simple pressing of both the "e" and the "r" keys at the same time on a keyboard at Interpol. But for us, it means we need to check back in 2 and half weeks to see what the next step is.

Number of days left on our tourist visas: about 127.

2) For upcoming meetings and appointments.

3) I ended up with an infection in my eye, something like conjunctivitis, on Monday, and after getting some stuff to combat it, am in great shape. Only one more day of eye drops! Had my eyes checked as well, and they are in great shape. But I don´t think it was conjunctivitis, because it behaved initially more like grains of sand in my eye from cement dust next door, and I don´t know anyone who has conjunctivitis at the moment. The treatment is the same as for conjunctivitis though, and the Lord really used the circumstances. Julie and Lydia get heroines of the week award for helping me with eye drops.

5) For Julie´s CEMO interviews. After several people in the ordination process met with Bp. Godfrey this week, their next step is to go back to Julie for their next step. And so she is not only moving forward with new people in the process, but unexpectedly, she is helping a group again currently in the process at the same time.

6) We are moving forward with arrangements for Lydia´s going to college trip in July/August. Please keep this in prayer, particularly for Lydia´s pre-license 5 hour classroom segment.

7) We are in the process of hopefully sending out our monthly newsletter, instead of Mudge Updates to parishes, beginning in March, perhaps a video format as well.

8) For the relationships and spiritual protection of missionaries and other diocesan team members in Peru, and for our ministries, finances, resources, and priorities.

9) That we would be able to keep on top of all the things that God would like us to do.

Thank you for praying for us. Your praying makes a difference for us, and I pray for you every day.
God bless you.
In Christ,
Shaw, and on behalf of Julie and Lydia

Scripture Prayer

2Corinthians 4: 13-14

But since we have the same spirit of faith as that shown in what has been written, “I believed; therefore I spoke,” we also believe, therefore we also speak. We do so because we know that the one who raised up Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus and will bring us with you into his presence.

Lord, thank You for the faith of Father Shaw and Mother Julie and Lydia Mudge. Thank You that they believe and they speak and that their ministries bring new members into your kingdom who will be raised up with Jesus and brought into your presence.

Lord, we pray for a bounteous harvest from the teaching and the preaching and the praying and the healing that goes on throughout the diocese of Peru. We lift up Bishop Godfrey and Bishop Michael Chapman as well. Lord, we ask for special blessings upon all of the clergy and lay leaders and missionaries in Peru. Specifically we thank You for good class sizes in the seminary and especially for the 32 students from 4 countries taking the on-line course. We ask that the visa and residency card situation be completely resolved. Let the Holy Spirit be with Fr. Shaw as he celebrates the Holy Eucharist at La Ascension. And please guide the Mudges in all the logistics planning that needs to be done for their American trip this summer and for Lydia’s send off to college.

Most of all, Lord, thank You for that promise for all believers: You will raise us up with Jesus on that last day! Thank You. Alleluia! Amen.

Prayer Mail

Dear Partners in Prayer,
Peace be with you.
This is our weekly public prayer mail for 21 Febrero 2011. Happy Presidents´ Day, and a Happy Birthday to our daughter Ruth.

Thanksgivings:

1) In all the courses, combined, there are quite a few students, including about 32 students taking an on-line course, from four countries. It is the seminary´s first on-line course.

2) Lydia came back from a really good diocesan retreat for Peruvian young adults on Sunday. She had fun and had a really good encounter with the Holy Spirit. (and Julie and I had a great date weekend while she was away!)

3) My large print altar book has been bound. I am pleased with the results.

4) Julie had a really good meeting with Bishop Godfrey on Friday to go over plans for ordinations and to begin planning for the next wave of students entering the ordination process in the Diocese of Peru.

Prayers:

1) For our visa and residency card situation upgrade. We head to Migraciones on Wednesday to find out our next step.
Number of days left on our tourist visas: about 133.

2) For upcoming meetings and appointments.

3) I celebrate the Holy Eucharist at La Ascension on Sunday.

4) For Julie´s CEMO interviews with people in the ordination process over the next week or so (Commission on Ministry).

5) We are getting approvals to make a trip to the US in July/August. There are many facets to this trip to be praying for, but the main purpose would be to get Lydia to college. Here are some things to be praying for on that trip, especially the logistics:

a) there is a program suggested by our missionary society to help her adjust back to the US, one of which is in Colorado, not far from where our niece will be getting married (two days after the end of Lydia´s program).

b) getting her driver´s license, including taking her five hour course, putting in the remaining driving hours (including night driving), and arranging for her driver´s exam.

c) setting up visits to churches around the Diocese of Albany, to visit while we are in the Diocese of Albany

d) Lydia has a college requirement to attend a wilderness experience which would be in the Adirondacks

e) packing and getting Lydia to college in time, and letting go.

6) We send out a short weekly prayer and praise to parishes for the Sunday bulletins, and we are in the process of hopefully sending out our monthly newsletter, instead, beginning in March.

This way, churches can post the newsletters on bulletin boards about what we are doing, and they can help raise parish awareness about missions activities of the Diocese of Albany. Please pray that our parish email database is current and comprehensive.

8) We are also thinking about making available short monthly video newsletters, accessible on the Internet. Your prayers about this would be appreciated.

9) For the relationships and spiritual protection of missionaries and other diocesan team members in Peru, and for our ministries, finances, resources, and priorities.

10) That we would be able to keep on top of all the things that God would like us to do.

Thank you for praying for us. Your praying makes a difference for us, and I pray for you every day.

God bless you.
In Christ,
Shaw, and on behalf of Julie and Lydia

February Newsletter

Students taking diocesan exams earlier this month

What you are doing for the spread of the Gospel in Peru, and beyond.

By supporting us, you are helping God´s work be accomplished, not just in Peru,
but across South America, and (as of this week), into North America, all based in
part on what we do here in Lima. You are helping to provide seminary tools
throughout Peru, including to the specific area within Peru where Bp. Mike
Chapman is concentrating his efforts, as well as elsewhere across North and South
America.

The students attending the Saints Augustine Seminary in Lima, Peru, include people like Mercedes, Dimas, Manuel, Juan Carlos, Oscar, and Anita, just to name a few. Some are near the end of their time in seminary. Some are reassessing their goals as to the kind of ministry they are called to, or how long it will take to complete their course of study. Some are just starting out in seminary.

All the students are making huge sacrifices to attend seminary in Lima, in terms of time and commitment. Because we are missionaries here(being supported by you in prayer and financially), the students do not have to pay the cost of our teaching here, a cost that neither they nor the Diocese of Peru could afford.

If we were not here, they would not be benefitting from our teaching, in areas such as New Testament, Old Testament, Evangelism, Preaching, Church History, Theology, and the Study and Interpretation of the Bible. Thank you everyone, on their behalf, for helping to make possible God´s future ministry plans for them.

But there is more. The seminary on-line capabilities are just getting underway, this week. I have created 12 short YouTube videos in the past few weeks as part of this effort. Once the on-line courses are up and going in their full capacity, not only will your contributions to SAMS on our behalf, and your prayers, continue
to make seminary affordable to the people in Lima through your support of us, your combined efforts will make seminary education more accessible to students across Peru and across South America who would not otherwise have access to seminary, at all. Thank you for being part of that.

And we are doing much, much more. So, when you think about us, or pray about us, or support us financially, remember that what we do here is not just about us, it is about the Anitas, Dimas, Bp. Mike Chapmans and Bp. Godfreys who you are helping, as well. Ultimately, it is about God building his church, one person at a time, in
thought, word and deed.
Prayer Requests:
• For the expanding on-line capabilities.
• For the students.
• For our relationships, priorities,
ministries, and finances.
God bless you, and thank you for your
continuing support! I pray for you, every day,
Shaw+, and on behalf of Julie+ and Lydia

Scripture Prayer

1Timothy 6: 11b-12

Pursue righteousness, godliness, faithfulness, love, endurance, and gentleness. Compete well for the faith and lay hold of that eternal life you were called for and made your good confession for in the presence of many witnesses.

Father God, we again come before You in intercession for Father Shaw and Mother Julie and Lydia Mudge. We thank You for all the gifts that You have bestowed upon them and for their faithfulness and perseverance in using these gifts for the spread of Your Kingdom in the diocese of Peru and throughout the world. Help them to continue to pursue righteousness and godliness as they work in love with their gentle spirits listening to You. Give all ministers within the diocese of Peru a spirit of collaboration which will only strengthen the team to compete well in a race to bring more souls into your heavenly embrace. Bless all aspects of the Mudges’ teaching and preaching and administrative ministries to equip others to become better disciples making disciples. Amen.

Prayer Mail

Dear Partners in Prayer,
Peace be with you.
This is our weekly public prayer mail for 14 Febrero 2011.

Thanksgivings:

1) Registration and orientation went well this week, and a fantastic linguist gave four outstanding presentations on how to read a book. This is part of the basic study skills message for the students who only have had a secondary school education.

2) A great deal of time in the past few weeks has been spent preparing for orientation and teaching. If you would be willing to sample the videos that I have created for the students, here is a YouTube playlist link: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=87497FBFCE6F1120

The videos attempted to convey (really boring but) important administrative stuff in an interesting manner; and from the students´ perspective, I think I did a good job of bringing it alive, or at least of making it entertaining.

4) Lydia started classes at the same school she attended in the fall, and loves it. She is also continuing homeschool studies, and we are in the final stretch before college.

5) We made it through Migraciones step 1 this week, and then followed that by a stop over at Interpol as part of our visa upgrades. We should hear back from Interpol in about a week to 10 days, so that we can proceed to the next step. More detail on this can be found on my Facebook page.

6) My personal large print altar book is finished. The next step is to get it bound.

Prayers:

1) For our visa and residency card situation upgrade. We wait upon divine Providence and Interpol. We are making reasonable progress. If, which is always exciting - because it is always an "if," all goes well, we should be in good shape well before the deadline.

Number of days left on our tourist visas: about 140.

2) For Julie and I as we continue to plan and prepare for seminary orientation and our courses on Biblical Interpretation. We have weekly meetings with the Rector of the seminary on Mondays at 10 am.

3) For our part in leading services at the Mision of La Ascension during the month of February. I celebrate again in about two weeks.

5) For Julie´s CEMO interviews with people in the ordination process over the next week of so (Commission on Ministry).

6) For the students who were not at orientation and who plan to take our classes. Also for the students who signed up for classes.

7) For our plans to lead services at other missions in the Lima area over the next few months.

8) With Lydia going to college later in the year, we are turning our attention to potential scholarships and also the amount of time we need to prepare. She has a wilderness program to attend (in the Adirondacks, of all places), and we hope that she can take her driver´s test to get her license before college. Please keep this in prayer.

9) For the relationships and spiritual protection of missionaries and other diocesan team members in Peru, and our ministries, finances, resources, and priorities.

10) That we would be able to keep on top of all the things that God would like us to do.

Thank you for praying for us. Your praying makes a difference for us, and I pray for you every day.

God bless you, and this week, have a happy Valentine´s Day.
In Christ,
Shaw, and on behalf of Julie and Lydia

Scripture Prayer

2 Timothy 2:2

You’ve heard my message, and it’s been confirmed by many witnesses. Entrust this message to faithful individuals who will be competent to teach others.

Lord, You know how Paul taught Timothy and Timothy was instructed to teach other faithful individuals who will then pass on the Christian message to even others. This is so much like the Mudge’s teaching mission. We pray Lord for an extra dose of the gift of teaching for Father Shaw and Mother Julie as they teach those in the Peruvian seminary to be able to go out and teach and preach to others. Inspire Father Shaw as he makes more teaching videos for You Tube. Be with both Shaw and Julie as they teach their course on Biblical Interpretation. And send Your Holy Spirit to the Rector of the Seminary as he creates the first on-line course on the book of Romans. We pray Lord for success in this distance learning initiative and we hope that this is just the first course of many that will be offered on-line and capable of reaching so many different students in the Spanish speaking world.

We pray for safety for Lydia as she navigates Lima’s bus system. We pray that all the administrative matters concerning the Mudge’s visa and residency card situation are resolved satisfactorily and in a timely fashion. And we pray for all the people in the ordination process and for Mother Julie as she continues to interview and guide these future servants of yours in their path of study.

Finally, Lord, we pray for the relationships and spiritual protection of all missionaries and other diocesan team members in Peru and for their ministries, finances, resources and priorities. Amen.

Prayer Mail

This is our weekly public prayer mail for Tuesday, 8 Febrero 2011. It is winter in the northern hemisphere and summer in the southern hemisphere.

Thanksgivings:
There are so many accomplishments this week, it is hard to remember them all.

1) The canonical exams went well on Saturday, and we have had time to look them over, to a great extent (a miracle in itself)

2) A meeting we had to strengthen ties between Peru and a Cathedral in North America went well yesterday.

3) Things are coming together nicely for the beginning of the seminary school year; orientation is this week. Still a bit to do. I now have about 12 short videos on YouTube for orientation week and the first classes that Julie and I teach this cycle.

4) Lydia is gaining a bit of independence as she learns some of the bus routes, for the things she needs to do to help the seminary, and as she begins her ISCL courses this week. Taking the bus sounds easy if you have Albany area bus service in mind.

(But try doing this in Spanish with no printed bus routes, working through the various prices per destination verbally with the attendants on board the buses, and hoping that the buses actually stop at the bus stops.

It does sort itself out with a bit of effort, a bit of self-organization, and experience. And she gets to take the buses, by herself, daily.)

5) The first on-line course of the seminary is going to start next week on the book of Romans (being taught by the Rector of the seminary), and there are students lined up across several geographic locations.

Prayers:

1) For our visa and residency card situation. We move into the next phase today (Tuesday) with the ubiquitous form F-007 and a trip to Migraciones in the morning.

Number of days left on our tourist visas: about 147.

2) For Julie and I as we continue to plan and prepare for seminary orientation and our courses on Biblical Interpretation. We have weekly meetings with the Rector of the seminary on Mondays at 10 am.

3) For our part in leading services at the Mision of La Ascension during the month of February. I celebrate this coming Sunday.

4) For the finalization of a liturgy book that I am compiling, for my use in services. It combines the latest version of Bp. Godfrey´s Peruvian rites with the Spanish version of the Book of Common Prayer that we also use. Hopefully, I can finish it this week.

5) For Julie´s CEMO interviews with people in the ordination process over the next few weeks (Commission on Ministry).

6) For Lydia as she begins her travels by bus, by herself.

7) For our plans to lead services at other missions in the Lima area over the next few months.

8) For the relationships and spiritual protection of missionaries and other diocesan team members in Peru, and our ministries, finances, resources, and priorities.

9) That we would be able to keep on top of all the things that God would like us to do.

Thank you for praying for us. Your praying makes a difference for us, and I pray for you every day.

God bless you.
In Christ,
Shaw, and on behalf of Julie and Lydia

Scripture Prayer

Isaiah 55:6

Seek the Lord while he makes himself available, call to him when he is nearby!

Father God, we seek you and we call out to you on behalf of Father Shaw and Mother Julie and Lydia Mudge.

Verses 8-11:

Indeed my plans are not like your plans, and my deeds are not like your deeds, for just as the sky is higher than the earth, so my deeds are superior to your deeds and my plans superior to your plans. The rain and snow fall from the sky and do not return, but instead water the earth and make it produce and yield crops, and provide seed for those who must eat. In the same way, the promise I make does not return to me, having accomplished nothing. No, it is realized as I desire and is fulfilled as I intend.

We pray that the Mudges’ plans are your plans and that their deeds are your deeds. We pray that their work results in much fruit: many people of Peru coming to know and love and serve You. May the Mudges’ ministry provide the seeds of knowledge to their seminarians needed to produce a new generation of faithful people in Lima. We pray for the beginning of the new semester: that there will be a good number of students in the classes and that each of these students has a calling from You. We pray that Your Holy Spirit will be present in each class, guiding the Mudges and guiding the students into all they need to know to be effective workers in the field.

Verses 12-13:

Indeed you will go out with joy; you will be led along in peace; the mountains and hills will give a joyful shout before you, and all the trees in the field will clap their hands. Evergreens will grow in place of thorn bushes, firs will grow in place of nettles; they will be a monument to the Lord, a permanent reminder that will remain.

Lord, give Father Shaw and Mother Julie and Lydia hearts of joy as they lead services at the Mision of La Ascenscion this month. Give them a spirit of peace as they know that Your Holy Spirit is with them every step of the way. May every soul that receives a new revelation of You be a monument to You, a permanent reminder that will remain. Amen.

Prayer Mail

Dear Partners in Prayer,
Peace be with you.
This is our weekly public prayer mail for 31 January 2011. It is winter in the northern hemisphere and summer in the southern hemisphere.

Thanksgivings:

1) For the progress we have been making in preparation for: orientation, the start of a new year of classes, and moving towards on-line seminary courses. It all gets underway in about a week. Most of our time has been spent on these matters.

2) For the interesting cultural experiences at the ecumenical service this week at a Roman Catholic Church in Lima on Tuesday, and at the briefing on "what is a healthy person" at the Anglican Cathedral on Thursday.

3) This week, Bp. Godfrey entrusted Julie and I with the task of drawing up the first canonical exams for the Diocese of Peru (we have had several discussions with him, already, on this subject). We submitted our draft for his review and modification.

Prayers:

1) For our visa and residency card situation. We move into the next phase on February 8.
Number of days left on our tourist visas: about 156.

2) For Julie and I as we continue to plan and prepare for seminary orientation and our courses on Biblical Interpretation. The school year begins next week. We have an important final meeting with the Rector of the seminary on Friday, February 4.

3) For our part in leading services at the Mision of La Ascension during the month of February (the Vicar of the mission is moving from one house to another, and is leaving services in the care of 4 of us, during that time period). There have been several discussions already with him, and plans are very well set.

4) For Julie´s CEMO interviews with people in the ordination process over the next month (Commission on Ministry). Also, for Julie and I: we plan to be proctoring canonical exams this coming Saturday.

5) For my niece who is starting a semester of classes in Jordan, as part of her college studies. She has recently arrived there with my brother, and the report back is that things seem to be relatively calm compared to other countries. Still, prayers would be appreciated as you think about it.

6) For Lydia who will be going on two up-coming retreats. One with the school she has been attending, and one is a diocesan retreat. In addition, her school is planning a senior high class trip in May, and your prayers for their choice of destination would be appreciated. They should be finalizing the May trip, sometime soon.

7) For the students whom God wants in our seminary classes. We would like at least 10 students in each seminary class.

8) For our plans to lead services at other missions in the Lima area over the next few months.

God bless you, and this week, have blessed a holy day of the Presentation of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Temple, and for fans of Punxsutawney Phil, have a happy Groundhog´s Day.

In Christ,
Shaw, and on behalf of Julie and Lydia

Scripture Prayer

Proverbs 3: 5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not rely on your own understanding. Acknowledge him in all your ways, and he will make your paths straight.

Father God, here we are again lifting up to You, your faithful servants, Father Shaw and Mother Julie and Lydia Mudge. We thank You that You have been guiding them along the straight path as they discern your instructions for their mission in Peru. Help them to continue to trust You, rely on You and acknowledge You in all their ways so that through the grace of your Son, Jesus Christ, and the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, they continue to do your will in all their ministries.

We ask specifically, Lord, that You clear the way to a resolution of the visa and residency card situation; that You be with them as they plan for seminary orientation and their course on Biblical Interpretation; that You lead them as they design and prepare on-line courses; that Julie’s interviews with ordination candidates go well; that the classes at the seminary are well enrolled; and that the services that the services that the Mudges lead are filled with Your Holy Spirit.

Last of all, Lord, we pray for the relationships and spiritual protection of all missionaries and other diocesan team members in Peru and that their ministries, finances, resources and priorities are according to Your will. Amen.

2) For the repair of the overhead light in our kitchen this week. One part of it suddenly detached from the ceiling. An electrician put it in place again.

3) We are enhancing our exercise and healthy eating habits. We do a lot more walking here, and it is good exercise.

4) Lydia introducing me to my "sticky notes" computer program. Now, I have a lot of them (there is much to do in our missionary life). It is a great organizing tool.

5) For the enhancements in our prayer blog.

6) For my 4 seminary instructional videos that are nearing completion. I am hoping to have the time to do more.

Scripture Prayer

Ephesians 6: 14-17

So then, take you stand! Fasten truth around your waist like a belt. Put on God’s approval as your breastplate. Put on your shoes so that you are ready to spread the Good News that gives peace. In addition to all these, take the Christian faith as your shield. With it you can put out all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Also take salvation as your helmet and the word of God as the sword that the Spirit supplies.

Lord, we continue to lift up Fr. Shaw and Mother Julie and Lydia Mudge to You. We know Lord that they are faithful to You. Help them, Lord, to always have your truth as a belt around their waists and your approval for everything that they do. May they always be ready to spread your Good News that gives peace. Show them more opportunities to spread this Good News to all that they encounter throughout the day. Protect them from the evil one as their faith persists and their hope of salvation, the precious gift of Jesus, propels them every day. Bathe them in the Holy Spirit as they read your word, live your word, and spread your word to all the people of Peru.

We continue to ask that the Mudges have your guidance in solving their visa dilemma. Be with Fr. Shaw and Mother Julie as they prepare for the course on Biblical Interpretation and explore many avenues for distance learning and on-line teaching. Send them all the students that You are calling into ministry. And we again pray for the relationships and spiritual protection of missionaries and other diocesan team members in Peru, their ministries, finances, resources and priorities.

We ask all of this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Newsletter

Our vision from the deep end.

I never cease to be amazed by the size of our current task: to teach people how to lead parishes. It sounds simple, on paper.

And we started out with relatively modest goals: to help teach classes in a seminary in Spanish. To do this, we needed to learn the culture and the language. But almost immediately, when we arrived, our task increased: to help teach Life in the Spirit seminars, to lead mentoring groups, to participate in the life of the Diocese of Peru, helping with healing and prayer ministry, for example.

Someone has called the acclimation process: "dropping you in the deep end." "Dropping you in the deep end" seems to be part of the life of a missionary.

And our task seems to keep getting a bit bigger, over time. For example, additionally, as typically happens to long-term missionaries, we have been helping with mission teams and guests who visit the Diocese of Peru. We have had to rethink curriculum-design in the face of student study skill deficits, resource shortages, and the overabundance of needs of parishes. "How to listen to God" has become a necessary life-skill that we are cultivating in the lives of students.

And most recently, we have begun planning on-line courses, to teach students across Peru, and in other countries, how to lead parishes. Yesterday, I took another step in that direction by developing my first on-line instructional video: how to use a bible concordance, as part of our biblical interpretation resources.

In the missionary environment, when resources do not exist and there is little in the budget with which to buy sufficient resources, we try to create the resources that we need. This seemingly small step of making an instructional video is actually a major step in the direction of developing on-line course materials.

From the beginning of our missionary life, however, I have wondered if there was ever such as thing as a "shallow end" in our work here. My conclusion: Nope. One size fits all. It has probably been that way for hundreds of years.

Prayer Requests:
• For the next seminary cycle of courses (the cycle begins on February 7)
• For seminary and diocesan plans.
• For our relationships, priorities, ministries, and finances.

God bless you, and thank you for your continuing support! I pray for you, every day,
Shaw+, and on behalf of Julie+ and Lydia

Recent seminary graduate Marco with his fiancee Vanessa. She liked this photo so much, that she used it as her Facebook photo. He is finishing as an intern at La Ascension in Surco as part of the ordination process. Marco is in the process of getting a teacher's degree, and they are getting ready to get married. You might consider praying for them daily, this month.

Prayer Mail

Dear Partners in Prayer,
Peace be with you.

This is our weekly public prayer mail for 17 January 2011. It is winter in the northern hemisphere and summer in the southern hemisphere.

Thanksgivings:

1) For the latest computer breakthroughs in the development of course materials this week: both the in-person courses and the on-line courses. I created my first instructional video this week, and we started working with "e-sword" in Spanish as some of the potential materials available to students in various locations.

2) For just being in Peru. Being here is totally awesome. I wake up every day, thinking to myself that I can not believe that I am here (of course, when I am in the Diocese of Albany, I think something similar to myself, as I am also grateful for the Diocese of Albany).

3) For the progress that we have made on the next phase of our visa process.

Prayers:

1) For our visa and residency card situation. Your continued prayers are appreciated.

Number of days left on our tourist visa: about 171.

2) For Julie and I as we continue to plan and prepare for seminary orientation and our courses on Biblical Interpretation. We had two days of good buddy time on this, this week. The school year orientation begins the week of February 7.

3) For the design and preparation of our on-line courses, and the development of related study skill matters. For the preparation and design for on-line courses across South America.

I am having almost daily meetings with the Rector of the seminary, as we plan on-line course related matters. In the meantime, he has lined up someone to begin working on study skills with the students. Adequate student study skills is a continent wide issue.

4) For the students whom God wants in the classes. We would like at least 10 students in each seminary class.

5) For our landlady´s responsiveness and openness to what remains to be done in our apartment.

6) For the relationships and spiritual protection of missionaries and other diocesan team members in Peru, and our ministries, finances, resources, and priorities.

7) That we would be able to keep on top of all the daily things that God would like us to do.

Thank you for praying for us. Your praying is very important, really makes a difference for us, and I pray for you every day.

God bless you.
In Christ,
Shaw, and on behalf of Julie and Lydia

Scripture Prayer

Ephesians 3: 14-21

This is the reason I kneel in the presence of the Father from whom all the family in heaven and on earth receives its name. I’m asking God to give you a gift from the wealth of his glory. I pray that he would give you inner strength and power through his Spirit. Then Christ will live in you through faith. I also pray that love may be the ground into which you sink your roots and on which you have your foundation. This way, with all of God’s people you will be able to understand how wide, long, high, and deep his love is. You will know Christ’s love, which goes far beyond any knowledge. I am praying this so that you may be completely filled with God.

Like Paul prayed for the Ephesians, Lord, we pray for Fr. Shaw and Mother Julie and Lydia Mudge. We ask Lord that you continue to gift them from the wealth of your glory. We pray that you give them inner strength and power from your Holy Spirit that Christ’s residence within them is evident through their faith. May all of their faith and ministry be rooted in your perfect love and may they and all their students and all to whom they minister understand how wide, how long, how high and how deep is Jesus’ love for them, a love which goes beyond any knowledge. May the Mudges be completely filled with You, God.

Lord, we ask for wisdom for the Mudges to know how to fix their visa and residency card situations. Help them to figure out the best strategy for Lydia and her college plans. Give them peace of mind that all will work out. And continue to guide them and inspire them as they prepare for the February semester and progress in the plans for on-line courses and distance learning. For all their concerns with their landlady and needed improvements in their apartment; for the students whom You want in their classes; for the relationships and spiritual protection of missionaries and other diocesan team members in Peru, and for their ministires, finances, resources and priorities: Lord, we put all of this into your hands.

Glory belongs to God, whose power is at work in us. By this power he can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory belongs to God in the church and in Christ Jesus for all time and eternity! Amen.

Mudge Prayer Mail

Dear Partners in Prayer,
Peace be with you.
This is our weekly public prayer mail for 10 January 2011. We like serving in Peru.

Thanksgivings:

1) For moving forward with the seminary course plans and preparations.

2) For the new computer program that we plan to use in the development of on-line course materials.

3) For the friends we have both in Peru and in the United States.

4) For the adventure of living in Peru.

Prayers:

1) For our visa and residency card situations. Your continued prayers would be appreciated.

2) For Lydia in the midst of all this, as she prepares for college. The amount of time that she would be away from Peru, each college year, could affect her residency document status, and we need prayer for which plans we should be making about her visa status process because of that.

3) For Julie and I as we continue to plan and prepare for seminary orientation and our courses on Biblical Interpretation. The school year begins the week of
February 6.

4) For the design and preparation of our on-line courses, and the development of related study skill matters. For the preparation and design for on-line courses across South America.

5) For the students whom God wants in the classes.

6) For our landlady´s responsiveness and openness to what remains to be done in our apartment. The curtains have been taken care of. The bathtub needs work (there is a crack down the center of it), but in the meantime, the shower in another bathroom is fine.

7) For the relationships and spiritual protection of missionaries and other diocesan team members in Peru, and our ministries, finances, resources, and priorities.

8) That we would be able to keep on top of all the daily things that God would like us to do.

Thank you for praying for us. Your praying is very important, really makes a difference for us, and I pray for you every day.

God bless you.
In Christ,

Mudge Scripture Prayer

Psalm 118: 22-24

The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
The Lord is responsible for this, and it is amazing for us to see.
This is the day the Lord has made. Let’s rejoice and be glad today!

Jesus, Lord, this is the day that you have made! We will rejoice and be glad! The builders may have rejected you, but we honor you! In your mysterious ways, you change weakness into strength, poverty into riches, and surrender into victory! We will rejoice in You and be glad!

We rejoice and are glad for Fr. Shaw and Mother Julie and Lydia Mudge. Thank You for their safe return to Peru. We ask that You be with them through this next week as they get back to work ministering to the people and the future spiritual leaders of Peru. Inspire them as they plan and prepare for seminary orientation and the course on Biblical Interpretation. Guide them as they design and set up on-line courses. Help them to develop lessons and activities which will help their students have better study skills. Lord, please send those students that You want in their classes. And Lord, we pray for relationships and spiritual protection of all the missionaries and diocesan team members in Peru, and for all their ministries, finances, resources and priorities.

All is done for your glory, Lord. We will rejoice and be glad! Amen.

Scripture Prayer

Numbers 6: 22-26

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.

Lord, Jesus, we offer to You this prayer at the beginning of the calendar year for the Mudge family and for all of their intercessors. May your face shine upon us; may we accept that wonderful free gift, your grace; may you approve of all that we do and send us your peace.

Specifically for Fr. Shaw and Mother Julie and Lydia, we pray for safe travel back to Peru. We thank you for all the blessings of their interlude in the U.S.: for the ordination of Hannah and Christina; for visits with so many family and friends, and for time to relax and regroup. We ask your blessings on the Mudge Mission in Peru. Help Fr. Shaw and Mother Julie with their preparations for the February seminary orientation and for the course on Bible Interpretation. Thank you for Lydia’s college scholarship and help her prepare for her years at Gordon College in Boston. We pray for the relationships and spiritual protection of all the missionaries and diocesan team members in Peru. And we lift up all of the Mudges’ ministries, finances, resources and priorities.

All is done for your glory, Lord. Amen.
