A Prayer from Liv Hicks

Father, help Shaw, Julie and Lydia to get the things they need, be encouraged, and learn the culture all the while knowing that they are in Your hands. Give them all a great sense of observation and humor. Keep them safe, food and beverage wise. Help them to enjoy the language learning process. Thank You Father for their hearts and desire to serve in Peru. In Christ we pray. Amen

Psalm 90:1

Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations.

Lord, You are our dwelling place and the dwelling place of Fr. Shaw, Mother Julie, and Lydia Mudge in Peru. Your Holy Spirit dwells with us and we are so thankful for that. Lord, we send up special prayers for the Mudges as they get settled in a new earthly dwelling place. Help them to get situated in their new, more permanent apartment. Let them stay on good terms with their landlady, and let those things that need fixing get repaired in a timely fashion. Let the internet problems be resolved, Lord, so that the Mudges can use Vonage to stay in more direct contact with their daughters, Hannah and Ruth, in the U.S. Thank You for the sense of humor and the organizational skills and the flexibility that you have given Fr. Shaw, Mother Julie, and Lydia, qualities that are helping them through this period as they get to know Lima. Help them to progress in their language study and be with them as decisions are made about the particulars of their ministry in Lima. Most of all, protect them from any danger and keep them in good health, protecting them from any food-borne illness. We praise You, Lord, and we thank You for all that the Mudges have learned in their first month in Peru. Amen.

Prayer Mail from Fr. Shaw

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Peace be with you.

I started to write you on Memorial Day observed. There are war memorials to both Americans and British at the Anglican Cathedral of the Good Shepherd in Lima.

Praise reports:
1) We just started to move into our new apartment on May 25th, Monday. It's a start of several days of moving in. Considering the potential pitfalls, this has been a very good move, so far.

2) We are getting to know Lima. Today, I bought an etiquette book written for people living in Lima: "Ese dedo meñique..." This is one of many ways to get to know the culture of Lima.

3) We are approaching our one month anniversary in language school. Language school has been very helpful. Every day, something comes together in a new way.

Prayer requests:
1) For the move. While it has been a good move so far, it seems that we keep uncovering things that need attention. Pray that we will remain on good terms with our landlady, and that things will continue to go smoothly.

2) Communications. We keep getting closer to the ideal situation, but we are not there quite yet. Our internet is up and going (somewhat tenuously at the moment), but if Vonage is going to work, we still need some additional matters taken care of.

3) Getting to know Lima. A veteran missionary said something that I think is true: "everything takes twice as long as you think it will, and three times as long as it should." I am reminded of three qualities that are important for a missionary: a sense of humor, organizational skills, and flexibility. I think we are doing rather well, but this is always something to keep in prayer.

If all goes according to established missionary patterns, in about two weeks, we should be entering the stage of adjustment entitled "chaos," in which it all suddenly catches up with you, and the "honeymoon" phase has been completed. You may remember that stage if you have moved from place to place, yourself. But once you get through that stage of chaos, then you land on solid ground with both feet, and the country begins to make more sense, and you keep going. So, keep us in prayer as we go through this phase of adjustment.

4) Preparation for our ministry. We had a meeting with the Bishop of Peru this past week, and he apparently gave us a green light to go ahead, because he asked us to begin the licensing process, and he personally introduced Lydia to quite a few people at the Cathedral during a reception on Saturday (an occasion of 3 ordinations). I plan to meet with the Dean of the Seminary next week to discuss teaching plans.

5) Language learning. It is a lifelong process, even though we are making more immediate progress. There is always more to learn. People in Lima speak very fast, compared to elsewhere in the country, and the manner of speaking seems to vary from person to person. So, keep our language comprehension and our ability to speak into situations, in your prayers.

6) Health. The water in Lima is good, and in our part of the city, it has chlorine in it. But everyone drinks bottled water, Inca Cola, Chicha Morada, or tea, or something, instead. However, sooner or later, you end up eating something that, well..., may not agree with you. Happens to everyone, even veteran missionaries. The discomfort does not last too long, but it is a subject to keep in prayer.

I continue to pray for you all daily. Thank you for your prayers. You and your prayers really make a difference for us.

God bless you.

In Christ,
Shaw, and on behalf of Julie and Lydia.

Acts 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we thank You for Fr. Shaw, Mother Julie, and Lydia Mudge and we thank You that You have called them to be your witnesses in Lima. We ask for an extra dose of your Holy Spirit for them, as they get acclimated to living in a new culture with a new language to learn. We ask for your blessings as they move into their more permanent apartment. May they always be guided by Your Holy Spirit and may they bless You with mighty work as they minister to all those they meet in Peru. Amen.

Prayer Mail from Fr. Shaw

Tuesday 19 May 09.
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Peace be with you.
Diocesan Convention is coming up on the Diocesan calendar, and as of tomorrow, we will have been in Lima for a month.

Thanksgivings:
1) Learning Spanish is a life-long endeavor, but we are making great progress, daily.
2) We are getting to know Lima better, and we have great friends to help us.
3) Thank you for praying for us. I pray for you daily.

Prayer requests:
1) Preparing for and settling in to our new apartment, starting next Monday.
This process will take several days, probably, between language-school sessions: to retrieve books stored in a garage, furniture stored at the cathedral, belongings stored in another apartment, and our clothes and some belongings in our current apartment, etc.
2) Learning Spanish. We have sensed your prayers on this.
3) Learning Lima and preparing for teaching classes.
4) Continued prayers for health. We are doing better.

God bless you!

In Christ,

Shaw, and on behalf of Julie and Lydia.

Colossians 2: 2-3

My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Lord, we thank you for the progress that Fr. Shaw, Mother Julie, and Lydia Mudge are making in language school. Thank you that they have graduated to Intermediate Level 2. We pray that they continue to make good advances in their knowledge of Spanish and in getting around in Lima. We pray also, Lord, that they continue to grow spiritually. May they be encouraged in heart and united in love and come to a deeper understanding of the mystery and the marvel that is Jesus Christ, the fount of all wisdom and knowledge. Amen.

Prayer Mail from Father Shaw

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Peace be with you.

I only have about 7 minutes before class. Hope I can fit our prayers in. If not, just keep us in prayer.

We had a great Mother's Day. Mother's Day is very important in Peru.

Praise reports:
1) Communications are coming along.
2) Language is coming along. We have started Intermediate level 2.

Prayers:
1) Communications arrangements. Cell phones, landlines, etc. It begins to add up, and we are making progress in sorting it all out. What do we really need, both in US and in Peru?
2) Banking arrangements.
3) Relationship with new landlord and with the current one. Apartment leases are different in Peru than in the US, and we would like this to be an on-going prayer item, to remain on good terms, and not let the relationships get bogged down in details.
4) Language learning. We're doing well, and we need to keep doing well.
5) Residential Visa and Carnet requirements; they just changed 5 weeks ago, which means that as they are now, eventually we have to start in Lima, go to Chile and come back, perhaps subsequently doing the same for Lydia. We plan to start the process at the end of language school in a few months.
6) Getting to know Lima better. We are learning a lot.

God bless you.

In Christ,

Shaw, and on behalf of Julie and Lydia.

Colossians 1: 9-12

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way, bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.

Lord we thank You for the progress that Fr. Shaw, Mother Julie, and Lydia Mudge have made this week in getting acclimated to life in Peru. We thank You that Fr. Shaw is feeling better and that progress is being made in learning Spanish. We continue to pray for the Mudges, asking You Father to continuously fill them with the knowledge of your will and grant them gifts of spiritual wisdom and understanding. Help them to live a life worthy of You and pleasing to You in every way, bearing fruit and always gaining in knowledge of You. Send them Your Holy Spirit to be strengthened with all power and showing great endurance and patience, thankfulness and joy. Let them be part of your kingdom of light and shine forth to the people of Peru bringing them into your kingdom too. Amen.

Prayer Mail from Father Shaw

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Peace be with you.

We move into our more permanent apartment in about 20 days. There is a lot to do between now and then. Please keep this in your prayers.

Recently I came down with a 48 hour bug of some kind. Praise God, I am fine! It must have simply been adjustment bug of some kind. Sooner or later everyone´s body seems to undergo some adjustment, exept Lydia´s it seems.....

Praise report
We are making friends, especially Lydia, and our language skills are improving. One key to getting to know a culture is to bring a 15 year old daughter with you.....

Prayer requests
1. Language learning.
2. Moving apartments.
3. Communication arrangements. What do we really need?
4. Learning Lima.

I was pondering where I could go and totally immerse myself in Spanish with the vocabularly I would need to be able to teach the courses that I need to teach, and the thought occurred to me that sitting in on other classes being taught would be a good plan. I think everyone thinks it is a great idea, but how to do that is a logistical challenge until we move. So, I would appreciate your keeping that idea in prayer, as well.

Language class begins in about 5 minutes.

God bless you. I pray for you daily. Thank you for praying for us. It makes a difference.

This can be a public prayer message, as you desire.

In Christ,

Shaw, and on behalf of Julie and Lydia.

A Note from Mother Julia

Dear Friends:

Thank you for your continued prayers. We are meeting many of the expected challenges of entering a new culture and a new language. So there are a few things you can pray for:

**** Pray for our health: Shaw has had some type of flu, and we are dealing with the traditional traveler’s bug. (Shaw says he is now in a vertical position, and loving it!)

****Tiredness: Being in a new culture is exhausting physically, mentally and emotionally. Please lift us up in this area.

****Decisions to be made: In the next few weeks we have to make decisions about setting up our home, which means buying beds and furniture, pots and pans, etc. All this takes time and energy and we want to be good stewards in all of this.

We are loving the people, the food, and the weather. Our visit to the seminary where we will be teaching made us know again in our hearts that this is right where we are supposed to be.

Thank you for your prayers. Know that you are on our minds and in our hearts as well.

Julia Mudge (on behalf of the Mudge family)
Psalm 37: 3-6

Trust in the Lord and do good;
Dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Delight yourself in the Lord
And he will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord;
Trust in him and he will do this:
He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn,
The justice of your cause like the noonday sun.

Lord, we pray for your presence with and your protection of Fr. Shaw, Mother Julie, and Lydia Mudge as they get acclimated to life in Peru. We pray against sickness and confusion and home-sickness. Send your Holy Spirit to help them with the everyday tasks that become more difficult in a new language and a new culture. Especially help them with the Spanish language, while they study it formally and as they must make themselves understood and comprehend those around them as well. Let the Mudges shine like the dawn and let their work bring glory to You. Amen.
